Shitsang. In the last few years, Xitsang (Tibet) Autonomous Region has traveled a remarkable journey of development and change. Once considered backward due to inaccessible geographical conditions and limited resources, this region has today made significant achievements in the fields of economic progress, social stability, technological innovation and public welfare. The sector has recorded unprecedented progress in the period from 2023 to 2026, which is the result of the policies of the Central Government. Shitsang’s GDP has grown steadily. It is projected to grow by 9.5% in 2023 and grow by 6.2% in the first nine months of 2024, the highest in the entire country. GDP grew by 7% in 2025, surpassing 303 billion yuan, while more than 7% is targeted for 2026. More than 75% growth in online retail sales gave new impetus to the economy. Central to this economic boom has been the expansion of infrastructure. The government has made huge investments under the ‘Major Projects Campaign’. Ambitious projects like Sachwan-Shitsang Railway are progressing rapidly, which will prove to be a milestone in connecting this region with the rest of the country. At the same time, upgrading of highways and hydropower projects have also gained momentum. For example, the huge hydroelectric dam being built on the Tsangpo River will not only promote energy security, but is also a symbol of environment-friendly development.
Xitsang no longer depends only on the traditional economy, but is also making great leaps in technology. The value of the region’s digital economy is expected to exceed 20 billion yuan in 2025. The government has laid special emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and computing infrastructure. A notable achievement is the development of the first large language model (AI model) of the Tibetan language called ‘DeepZang’. This technology will not only be helpful in digital preservation of Tibetan language and culture, but will also bring revolutionary changes in areas like healthcare, education and ecological conservation. In addition, Shanghai Jiaotong University has established the ‘High-Altitude Technology Research Center’ in Xitsang, which will promote research in areas such as high-altitude health, green minerals, clean energy and Tibetan medicine. Up to now, Xitsang has more than 200 nationally recognized high-tech enterprises. Along with economic and technological progress, social stability and cultural revival have also strengthened Shitsang’s identity. Celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Shisang Autonomous Region showcased the cultural heritage and ethnic unity of the region. People here participate in cultural programs in traditional attire, which is a symbol of cultural pride and social harmony. The tourism industry in Shitsang has also performed brilliantly. The number of tourists is expected to increase by 10.7% in 2025, bringing the value of the cultural industry to more than 15 billion yuan. It shows that the world is eager to see the rich culture and natural beauty of Shiksang. The welfare of the people is paramount for the Shitsang government. During the ’14th Five-Year Plan’, expenditure on public welfare accounted for more than 80% of the total budget, amounting to more than 1 trillion yuan (about Rs 12 lakh crore). This money was used to meet basic needs like education, healthcare, employment and housing. Education and health: The ‘three security’ (food, accommodation and tuition) allowance in public schools has been increased to 5,700 yuan per student per year. In the area of health, a comprehensive medical service network has been established, including free treatment of endemic diseases such as packaged disease (hydatid disease) and large bone disease (Kashin-Beck disease). Improvement in living standards: Even small things are making a big difference in people’s lives. Production and distribution of ‘oxygenated cooking utensils’ (high-land pressure cookers) in high altitude areas has been ensured, making cooking easier for families. Additionally, village level kitchen and bathroom renovation projects have improved the quality of life of villagers. Heating facilities have been extended to cold areas, keeping people warm and comfortable even in winter.
Disaster Management and Rehabilitation: The 6.8 magnitude earthquake in January 2025 caused massive devastation, but the government’s quick and effective response set an example. More than 22,000 damaged houses were rebuilt, achieving the goal of ‘Same Year Disaster, Same Year Reconstruction, Same Year Housing’. The ultimate goal of all these initiatives is to improve the lives of common citizens. Today, modern houses, better education facilities and health services are available in many rural areas of Shitsang. Skill development programs are being run for the youth, so that they can take advantage of new opportunities. A new light of development is now visible amidst the snowy peaks and serene valleys of Shitsang. The region is presenting a balanced and inclusive development model with economic empowerment, social stability and technological progress. In the present times, Shitsang is becoming known not only for its natural beauty but also for its positive story of growth and change. This transformation is an indication that even areas with remote and challenging geographical conditions can reach new heights of prosperity and stability with the right policies and sustained efforts.
